The Countryside

Generally, the countryside around Yaroslavl is relatively flat. There are no mountains of note. Much of it is either forest, agricultural land or marshland.

There are a large number of villages, some with just a few houses. Generally, houses in villages are quite old and made of wood, although in more recent years large, modern homes have stated to appear in some places.

Many people living in Yaroslavl (and other cities) have a Dacha (summer house) in a country village to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

If you get a chance, try to visit a village or two, as they can be enchanting - and you can get some idea of what Russia must have been like many years ago.
